The Childers-Childers Debate
A Virtual Cross-Time Debate Between Jeff Childers 1996 and Jeff Childers 1998 About the Identity of the New Testament Church
1996 First Answer
(Resolved: The Church founded by Jesus Christ is the so-called Protestant denomination, the Church of Christ, and not the Roman Catholic Church.)
The passage cited by my opponent is completely in line with the teachings of the Church of Christ. Paul's words do not assign any authority to the Church, but rather give her responsibility. The Church is not, as Roman Catholics would have us believe, the author of the truth, but the pillar and foundation of the truth. The Church is to support the truth and proclaim the truth, but she cannot invent it. The Church has no authority to proclaim as dogma supposed new revelations from God. If and when the Church ceases to uphold the truth, she ceases to be its pillar and foundation and ceases to be the Church of Christ.
