The Childers-Childers Debate
A Virtual Cross-Time Debate Between Jeff Childers 1996 and Jeff Childers 1998 About the Identity of the New Testament Church
1996 First Question
(Resolved: The Church founded by Jesus Christ is the so-called Protestant denomination, the Church of Christ, and not the Roman Catholic Church.)
The Roman Catholic Church baptizes people by pouring water over their heads. We in the Church of Christ only accept baptism by full immersion in water. Consider these words of the Apostle Paul:
"Or are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life." (Romans 6:3,4)
And again:
"You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead." (Col. 2:12)
My question for my opponent is: Do the scriptures not teach that baptism is to be a full burial in water?
